Faro, Portugal

Ah, Faro, such a cute little town. I stayed here for about three nights and four days and had so much fun. It's small but adorable. If you ever find yourself here, take time to just walk around without a map. You'll come across cute streets and great restaurants. Seriously, the food in Portugal is so delicious.

My top 5:

  • Ilha Do Farol. It was hot one day so my friend and I decided to take a ferry to the little nearby island. I highly recommend going there! The lighthouse beach is incredibly adorable and it feels like a big party. Everyone is playing in the water with their jet skies or snorkeling, playing volleyball, tanning, drinking and just relaxing. I never wanted to leave. There is a kiosk where you can buy tickets for the ferry right where the dock is.

  • The Faro Cathedral. You can scale this tower to gaze over Faro’s streets and the lagoon. It’s really beautiful and a sight to see. I recommend it.

  • Arco da Vila. A waterside gateway. Just above the portal, you can see a statue of St Thomas Aquinas in an alcove.

  • Cidade Velha. An entrance into Faro’s old town, which is really different from the rest of the city. There are occasional exhibitions inside, and you have to go in to see the oriental-style library and stairway decorated with tiles.

  • Local Cuisine. Try the oysters. They are SO GOOD. I mentioned already that the seafood is phenomenal. Caldeirada is a warming Portuguese fish and seafood stew and will have whitefish like cod, hake or flounder, oily fish like tuna, squid, and locally-produced shellfish such as clams and mussels.
